Feeding

50/50 seed
50% canary / 50% millet seed

Throughout the year my birds are fed on a basic diet of 50% plain canary and 50% white millet seed.To this I add, out of the breeding season, a good quality tonic seed. A regular supply of millet sprays are given in the flight throughout the year. The breeding pairs are given millet sprays when they are feeding chicks.

I do not give my birds many suppliments, unlike many other people, but they do have an holistic herbal tonic called Moor Gold in their water every other day. All the birds have access to iodine blocks in both the cages and flight. Breeding pairs are given a soft food a few days before their first chick is due to hatch right through until the pair are parted. At present I am using EMP. Adult birds are given groats about twice a month only, as I believe they can become overweight if fed groats too often. During the season, the birds enjoy fresh corn on the cob. Carrot is given on a reqular basis. I do not feed green food.

I do treat the young budgies differently in the first few weeks after being separated from their parents. They are given the normal seed, millet sprays, soft food and groats all of the time. The theory being they are bound to find something they like to eat. Sometimes a newly parted chick is a very poor feeder and, to help it out initially, I sometimes have to resort to a booster feed through a crop tube. Fortunately this doesn't happen very often.
