The Birdroom

My Birdroom

My birdroom is of a single concrete block construction measuring some 12 feet wide by 18 feet 6 inches long. I put an extention onto the side measuring 6 feet wide by 18 feet 6 inches long, this was divided width ways into two flights with a small safety porch. In here I kept my small collection of Australian Broadtails, including Rock Pebblers, Pennants and Meally Rosellas. This area is now used as a storeroom. To the rear of the main room is a wooden extention measuring 6ft.by 18ft. This is divided into an internal flight 6ft.by 9ft., and the other area now has 15 breeding cages.

Inside the main birdroom I have 49 conventional wooden breeding cages split into banks of twelve, eight, eight, six and fifteen. There is also a raised flight measuring 6 feet by 4 feet with 3 built in stock cages underneath. A second flight measures 9ft. by 6ft.. I also have the benefit of a form of gas central heating ( not for the birds but for me in those cold winters) and fitted kitchen units with a sink and a cold water supply. I use nest boxes which hang on the outside of the cages, and are a box within a box type. My seed is stored in a large wooden hopper, which is designed to hold 50kg of seed in one compartment and 25kg in the other. The room is designed to give the birds plenty of space to cut down on stress. I normally start the breeding season with around 120 birds and hopefully end it with around 250.
